The Deeper 33, pattern 19: Insurance posture is ambiguous.

Is your insurance posture clear on your website?

Published June 7, 2026 Updated October 7, 2026 By Rick Julian

How should I explain insurance and private pay on my site?

Maybe we take some plans is not a policy—it is a filter failure. Clients with the wrong insurance still email; cash-pay clients assume you are in-network and feel misled at intake. Say exactly what you do and do not bill, and what paperwork you provide.

Vague insurance copy in the wild

Footers say We accept most major insurances without listing which plans or whether you are in-network versus out-of-network.

Superbill language hides behind jargon clients do not know until they have already booked.

Group practices list practice-wide policies while individual clinicians differ, creating surprise bills.

Wrong inbox, angry first sessions

Each misaligned insurance inquiry costs admin time and emotional labor saying no.

Clients who needed a sliding scale you do not offer may ghost instead of clarifying—because the site implied flexibility.

Referrers stop sending insurance-sensitive cases when your site makes billing sound mysterious.

Billing clarity in search answers

People search therapist that takes Blue Cross in [city]. Pages without plan names miss those queries ethically and practically.

FAQ schema on insurance topics helps only when answers are precise and current.

GBP attributes and website fees must agree or clients choose based on outdated info.

Write policies clients can act on

List in-network plans, OON with superbill yes/no, and pure private pay separately.

Explain what clients should verify with their insurer before session one.

Update within a week of any payer change; note effective dates if needed.

Questions therapists ask about this pattern

Should I list every plan I have ever billed?

List current in-network plans you actively accept. Outdated lists harm trust.

What if I cannot list rates for insurance?

Explain that client responsibility varies; still clarify network status and verification steps.

Can I say insurance accepted on the homepage?

Only if the linked page details which plans. Vague badges create false hope.
