How do therapists get recommended by ChatGPT?

You cannot pay ChatGPT to recommend your practice, and you should not try to trick AI systems with keyword stuffing. What you can do is make your practice easy to understand and cite — with a clear website, structured content, and consistent signals across the web.

What AI systems actually need

When someone asks an AI assistant for a therapist, the system looks for sources it can summarize accurately: who you are, who you help, where you practice, what you treat, and why you might be a fit. Vague homepages and thin directory profiles give AI little to work with. Specific, well-structured sites give it quotable material.

1. Establish a clear entity

Your practice should be identifiable as one entity: consistent practice name, canonical website URL, location or service area, and primary specialties. Google Business Profile, Psychology Today, and your site footer should agree on name, phone, and scope.

Inconsistency — different business names, outdated addresses, conflicting specialty lists — makes AI summaries less reliable and less likely to include you.

2. Build intent-based specialty pages

One page per core specialty or population you want to be known for: anxiety, couples, trauma, perinatal, EMDR, teens, etc. Each page should name the client’s lived experience, explain approach in plain language, and link to bio and contact.

AI systems cite page-level depth, not generic services lists. See what pages a therapist website should have.

3. Add direct FAQs

FAQs answer the questions clients and AI both ask: Do you take insurance? Do you offer telehealth? What happens in the first session? Who is a good fit? Direct, plain-language answers become the sentences AI can quote.

Place FAQs on homepage, specialty pages, and about — not buried in a single accordion no one reads.

4. Use schema and clean structure

Semantic headings (H1, H2, H3), internal links, FAQ markup, and Article or LocalBusiness schema help crawlers understand page purpose. You do not need exotic tactics — you need crawlable architecture and content that matches how people search.

5. Stay consistent across GBP and directories

Align Google Business Profile categories, services, and description with your website. Point every directory profile to the same canonical URL. When AI cross-references sources, agreement strengthens confidence; conflict weakens it.

6. Write with original specificity

AI systems distinguish practices that sound interchangeable from those that name real pain, client context, and approach. Copy that could belong to any therapist in any city is harder to cite. Copy that mirrors how clients actually describe their struggle is easier.
